People often choose to live in condos and townhomes, rather than detached single family homes, to be close to the places they frequent the most like work, shopping, dining out or enjoying some live entertainment. In fact there is an overall movement going on across the country that has homebuyers migrating into town from more rural, residential environments.

According to a 2014 Neilsen report a whopping 62 percent of Millenials (ages 18-36) prefer a metropolitan home base because it makes it easier to stay socially connected. Baby boomers (ages 47-67) are also making the choice to live in town as they downsize their lifestyle. As a result, the growth of urban mixed use communities is outpacing the growth outside of them for the first time since the 1920s.

Orange County is sometimes thought of in terms of its urban sprawl. It's true that even when you live in town, driving to work is often unavoidable. But once you're home, it's nice not to have to get in a car to eat out at a favorite restaurant, browse the shops or take in a local event. So where then, can you find the most walkable cities in Orange County?

Here's a short list to get you started.

Downtown Anaheim

Downtown Anaheim is a vibrant historic area just north of Anaheim's Resort District. It is also known as the Colonial District and is high on our list of walkable cities in Orange County because of the Center Street Promenade, an avenue of shops, restaurants, the Downtown Anaheim Farmer's market and Art Walk. You'll also find the Pearson Amphitheater and Park and the popular gourmet food hall, The Anaheim Packing House.

The Harbor Lofts are an excellent choice in this area. This low rise loft community is located right on Center Street within walking distance to everything downtown. There are some true live/work units in the 1,600-1,760 square foot range and ten other flexible floor plans ranging up to more than 2,400 square feet. Enjoy granite counters, concrete floors, secure access, garage parking and unique sky walk entries. The Stadium Lofts are highly walkable option in The Platinum Triangle section of downtown Anaheim. Downtown Huntington Beach

Huntington Beach is an undeniably touristy area, but it's still great for locals. There is a decent collection of condos within walking distance to the town center which is centered around Main Street.  Locals can walk to a dozen restaurants and bars, but best of all, the beach and pier are right there too.  Grab a coffee at Primos Coffee before walking across the street for a stroll along the beach.

Huntington Bay is an older condo community with 1-3 bedroom units close to everything in town. Pier Colony is a newer Mediterranean style condo complex, close to Main Street and the pier with resort-style amenities and ocean views.

Downtown Brea

Downtown Brea recently underwent a massive urban redevelopment on 50-acres and is now home to a vibrant, outdoor mixed-used retail center with boutique shops, outdoor cafe's movie theaters and The Improv comedy club.  We expect to see more residential building in this neighborhood, so we've included it in this article. Eastpoint Village is an older, multi-story townhome community within walking distance to The Brea Marketplace and the Brea Mall.  The South Brea Lofts  newer development of condos above retail on the first floor a few blocks away from most of the action.
